Weight Loss Wednesday – Weeks 15 and 16 May 4, 2011

So, my fast is over and I’ve taken a couple of weeks off. I fully expected to gain some in the last couple of weeks. I splurged on chocolate, fast food, a couple a great steaks and some late night snacks. I’ve not even tried to meet my goals. Add in lots of rainy weather (not good for walking) and a mini-vacay… Well, let’s just say I didn’t have any high hopes.

What surprised me is how easy it was to fall back into my old ways. It was easy to go back to eating the “regular stuff.” Some friends asked if I felt better during my time of fasting. To be honest, not really. I didn’t find that I had more energy or felt less sluggish. I have five kids. At the end of the day, I’m tired. I did notice fewer headaches and I’m sure that factors in with my coffee consumption.

During my mini-vacation, I did have several people notice quickly that I’d lost weight. It felt good to have them notice. Now the pressure’s on, I suppose, to continue losing so that next time they see me they don’t think “man, what happened? She WAS looking good…”

Since I know I didn’t meet any of my goals (at least hardly any of them), I’m going to skip that part and just get to the weight. I fully expected to gain…

Here are the numbers:

  • Starting weight:  204.4
  • Initial goal weight:  150
  • Current weight:  182.6 (lost 0.8 lbs.) – I’m just glad I didn’t gain.

So, here’s to getting back on track and going down another pant size. I think that’ll be awhile, but it only takes one pound at a time.

I’ve lost the exercise bug. I haven’t been doing anything. I’m just saying that up front because this is the way I often do it. I’m great at something for a while – get into a good routine – then it all goes away. I don’t stick with it. I never seem to fully incorporate new changes into my life. I’m not sure why. I just lack persistence maybe? I need to think on this more because I know that exercise is key for me. The weather is getting warmer and there are no excuses.

When it comes to food, I’m still learning. Easter morning brings the end to my Daniel Fast. I’m a little concerned about how my body will react. I do think I’ll still eat very little meat. I hope I continue with very little sugars. I want my dairy though. I want milk and cheese. Eggs? I could go either way. I wonder how sweet, sweets will taste though. I’m thinking they’ll all be so overwhelming at first. I’m hoping that my palette has been cleansed and that only 2 cookies will do me just fine.

Here is my goal progress:

  1. Incorporate a fresh fruit or vegetable for each meal – I think I’m still doing okay here. I did try mango.
  2. Use more seasonings to make meals more interesting – Not so much this past week.
  3. Eat breakfast every day, cereal no more than 3 times a week – I did just fine.
  4. Walk at least 3 times a week – Big no here.
  5. Don’t eat after 9pm – Big no here too. It’s had when Bill is gone. One night, I pigged out on corn tortilla chips and homemade salsa.
  6. Try at least one new recipe each week – Homemade salsa and vegan chili!
  7. Drink at least 2 big blue glasses of water a day. – Yep.

Here are the numbers:

  • Starting weight:  204.4
  • Initial goal weight:  150
  • Current weight:  183.4 (lost 1.8 lbs.) – My poor eating and lack of exercise shows.

Weight Loss Wednesday – Weeks 11 and 12 April 6, 2011

Yes, I know. I missed a week. Last week was… well, it could take up its own post. And yes, I realize I haven’t been blogging about much of anything lately. It’s not that I haven’t had anything to say, I’m just not sure how to say it all I guess. But, since I have had at least 3 people mention me not blogging (I guess I didn’t realize it was that profound), here I am, telling you about my last 2 weeks.

I’m still fasting. I will say that this last week it has been hard. I’m not missing the meat as much as I am the dairy. I want cheese. I want it plain. I want it on soup. I want it on my lentil filled tacos (yes, that was one of the new recipes). A few years ago, I had a youth group member who gave up cheese for lent. I warned this young person to be careful after Easter morning when re-introducing cheese back into the diet. I warned of the back-ups that could occur. I just hope I remember to head my own advice!

Here is my goal progress:

  1. Incorporate a fresh fruit or vegetable for each meal – I think I’m still doing okay here. I’m getting a bit bored of the same things though and need to branch out.
  2. Use more seasonings to make meals more interesting – Not so much lately. I have been using interesting food combinations though.
  3. Eat breakfast every day, cereal no more than 3 times a week – A couple of mornings it was a slim meal or late in the morning. And I don’t consider “hot cereal,” like oatmeal, to be cereal.
  4. Walk at least 3 times a week – Big no here. We’ve had rainy weather and I was sick (both excuses I suppose). I think I’ve walked twice in the last 2 weeks.
  5. Don’t eat after 9pm – I think I had a bite or two after 9 one night.
  6. Try at least one new recipe each week – Yep, we tried several. Indonesian tofu stir fry was good (I thought). Blue even made a stir fry one night!
  7. Do sit-ups or push-ups each day– Nope. I didn’t even think about it. I suppose I need to just eliminate this one. Your thoughts?
  8. Drink at least 2 big blue glasses of water a day. – Most days. When I was sick I should’ve been drinking more, but I think I actually drank less.

Here are the numbers:

  • Starting weight:  204.4
  • Initial goal weight:  150
  • Current weight:  185.2 (lost 4.4 lbs.) – I’m down to a size 12; I actually had to buy new pants!

As Easter approaches, I’m starting to think about how I will “re-enter” regular eating. I’m also wondering what effects I will see from going off the fast. I will reincorporate dairy, but I’m really not missing the meat that much. I may stay very low meat. I’m also learning that I can satisfy a sweet tooth with fruits too. I am loving purple grapes, cut in half, as a salad topping!

So those of you that are on a weight-loss journey too. How have you been doing? What successes have you had? What are you struggling with?

It’s been a crazy day around here. And yes, I know I haven’t been blogging much lately. There are so many things swirling in my head, yet I just can’t seem to take the time to “put them on paper.” I’ve been reading my Bible a lot more too, so that is taking up more time. But mostly, I’ve just not felt compelled to write.

I’ve lost weight again. Yes, I realize that is the goal. My pants are getting baggy. That is a good thing. I just worry that my weight loss the last couple of weeks may be too much. I’m keeping an eye on it. I’m eating a lot of beans, nuts, fresh fruits and veggies and spinach and kale for calcium and iron. If I wasn’t breastfeeding the baby still, I wouldn’t be as concerned, but since I am, I have to be extra careful. I did speak with our doctor today (baby is 18 lbs at 4 months old!) and he just cautioned about calcium and iron. I cook in a cast iron skillet too.

Here are my goals. Realize that it hasn’t just been a day – it’s been a crazy week.

  • Here is my goal progress:
    1. Incorporate a fresh fruit or vegetable for each meal – Sometimes they were frozen or cooked in the dish, but there was always something available.
    2. Use more seasonings to make meals more interesting – Thyme, oregano, basil and lemon juice!
    3. Eat breakfast every day, cereal no more than 3 times a week – A couple of mornings it was a slim meal or late in the morning.
    4. Walk at least 3 times a week – I’m not sure about this one. I think I missed it this week. I did, however, play frisbee with Professor on at least 2 occasions.
    5. Don’t eat after 9pm – I think I had a bite or two after 9 one night.
    6. Try at least one new recipe each week – Yep, we tried several.
    7. Do sit-ups or push-ups each day– Nope. I didn’t even think about it.
    8. Drink at least 2 big blue glasses of water a day. – I always got in 2 glasses, but I’m actually trying to drink about 1/2 gallon of water daily.

    Here are the numbers:

    • Starting weight:  204.4
    • Initial goal weight:  150
    • Current weight:  189.6 (lost 2.6 lbs.)

    Weight Loss Wednesday – Week 9 March 16, 2011

I’m nine weeks into this journey. I feel like it’s slow going. Sometimes I get disappointed and want to look in the mirror and see better results. No one has said “Wow! It looks like you’ve lost some weight!” And then I get frustrated that I feel like I need that kind of comment to feel validated in this journey. I want to look better, but I don’t want this journey to be about that. It’s a weird place. That being said, I do have to remember that because I am still breastfeeding the baby, I need my weight loss to be slow. I’m not just providing nutrients for me, but also for a baby and I need him to be healthy too.

Last week, I mentioned that it was Ash Wednesday and the start of the season of Lent. As a Christ-follower, I observe the season of Lent as a time of sacrifice and spiritual “spring cleaning” of sorts. (For more information and FAQ click here.) In the past I have given up chocolate, white flour, complaining and various other things. This year, I felt called to participate in the Daniel Fast during the season of Lent. In this particular fast, participants basically eat a vegan diet with additional restrictions of no processed foods, no sweeteners and no chemicals/additives.

This pull to do this particular type of fast relates in part to the journey I share with you on Wednesdays. I’ve said before – I love food. When I’m bored, I run to food. When I’m tired, I run to food. When I’m sad, I run to food. It’s like a love affair I need to break. It’s a spring cleaning for my body, mind and soul. By eating in this manner, my body is self-cleaning and my taste palate is being reset. We are trying many new dishes and I’m learning that I enjoy a multitude of tastes. I’m actually enjoying some foods even more than I did before! So until Easter, I’ll be sharing about this specific Lenten journey and the truths that I am learning.

    Here is my goal progress:

    1. Incorporate a fresh fruit or vegetable for each meal – Sometimes they were frozen or cooked in the dish, but there was always something available.
    2. Use more seasonings to make meals more interesting – I’ve actually made my own “special seasoning” to use as well as trying fresh grated ginger!
    3. Eat breakfast every day, cereal no more than 3 times a week – I did eat breakfast everyday and not once was it cereal. I actually haven’t been able to find any cereal I can eat.
    4. Walk at least 3 times a week – I think so. We’ve had some rainy weather, so I actually didn’t keep track.
    5. Don’t eat after 9pm – On Monday night I ate some tortilla chips between 9 and 9:30.
    6. Try at least one new recipe each week – Yep, we tried several. A couple of them were good, one was a total flop.
    7. Do sit-ups or push-ups each day– Nope. I actually forgot about this most days.
    8. Drink at least 2 big blue glasses of water a day. – I always got in 2 glasses, but I’m actually trying to drink about 1/2 gallon of water daily.

    Here are the numbers:

    • Starting weight:  204.4
    • Initial goal weight:  150
    • Current weight:  192.2 (lost 6 lbs. – this is mostly due to the detox that happens at the start of most fasts)

I just realized I haven’t blogged in a week! My apologies to those of you who are “loyal readers.” Racer was gone for 12 days racin’, and I was doing double time. I barely got laundry done. I’ve also been battling an eye infection since Sunday. And the weather’s been yucky on and off over the last week. I feel like I’m just now starting to get caught up – whatever that means in a family of 7. Will I ever really be “caught up?”

Today is Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent, and I am making some changes. I’ll fill y’all in later, but since I mentioned it last week, I felt I needed to again.

    1. Incorporate a fresh fruit or vegetable for each meal – I was about 75% here. Mostly fruit or carrots.
    2. Use more seasonings to make meals more interesting – We had some boring meals this week, trying to use up some stuff in the pantry!
    3. Eat breakfast every day, cereal no more than 3 times a week – I did eat breakfast everyday, but it was a lot of cereal. Again, trying to use some stuff up.
    4. Walk at least 3 times a week – Yes!
    5. Don’t eat after 9pm – I know that last night I did, but other nights no.
    6. Try at least one new recipe each week – Yep!
    7. Do sit-ups or push-ups each day– This is new, so nothing.
    8. Drink at least 2 big blue glasses of water a day. – I didn’t do great on this one this past week. I got at least one glass in everyday, but not always 2.

    Here are the numbers:

    • Starting weight:  204.4
    • Initial goal weight:  150
    • Current weight:  198.2 (gained 0.4 lbs.)

I’m sitting here this morning drinking my coffee (cream, sugar and a little vanilla extract) and eating grapes. I’ll have some toast too I think. Dinner is in the crock pot (we’re test driving lentil soup tonight). All that and I’m bored. Racer is gone and will be for another week. Last night and the night before I sort of sabotaged myself. While watching tv (it was before 9pm though) I sat and ate chocolate squares (just smaller than a Dove chocolate piece) with blobs of peanut butter on them.

Peanut butter and chocolate is one of God’s greatest taste creations on earth!

And I realized two things – I eat when I’m bored and sad. I am both because Racer is gone. Yes, he’s working, but still, he’s gone. I’m handling it better than I have in the past, but when I’m sitting by myself with no one to interact with, food becomes my partner, my mistress. Food brings me happiness (for the moment) and somehow I don’t have to think about reality – especially when watching “reality” tv!

So, during the season of Lent, Ash Wednesday through Easter, I’ll be concentrating more fully on God and allowing Him to help me break this dependence I have on food for things other than physical nourishment. I’m hoping that God will give me a new perspective.

    1. Incorporate a fresh fruit or vegetable for each meal – Didn’t do so hot with breakfast fruit this past week. We’ve been low on and out of bananas.
    2. Use more seasonings to make meals more interesting – Ancho chili powder on pork chops is yummy!
    3. Eat breakfast every day, cereal no more than 3 times a week – I didn’t really pay attention to this one, but I’m pretty sure I had cereal more than 3 days.
    4. Walk at least 3 times a week – Yes – A few days we walked twice!
    5. Don’t eat after 9pm – I did check the clock a couple of times when I went to get a snack, but wasn’t even close to 9.
    6. Try at least one new recipe each week – Yep!
    7. Walk down the lane with a family member at least one time per week – Changing this one next week to something to do with weight training.
    8. Drink at least 2 big blue glasses of water a day. – I didn’t do great on this one this past week. I got at least one glass in everyday, but not always 2.

    Here are the numbers:

    • Starting weight:  204.4
    • Initial goal weight:  150
    • Current weight:  197.8 (lost 0.2 lbs.)

I did it!!! I reached my first “unofficial” goal and am officially below 200!! That is a big deal for me. After babies, it seems like it takes forever for me to get below that mark. I hope I haven’t jinxed myself by being so excited. I really do think the good weather has helped in that we’ve been able to get outside and be active most days. I really do think that going back to work has something to do with it too. I’m gone 2 mornings a week (no snacking then) and when I am home, I have to do the same stuff in less time. I’m not eating out of boredom anymore. I’ve also been trying to read more, which helps with the boredom too.

As the weather gets warmer, I can no longer hide under bulky sweaters and layers of clothes. I’ll be honest, when I tried on some short sleeve and spring stuff and looked in the mirror, I was disgusted. I know others see me differently, but I am short and squatty. Four pregnancies and me not taking care of myself have taken their toll on my body. Stretched out skin, flabby rolls, “bye-bye” arm” – blech. That’s how I feel when I see myself. I have no one to blame but myself.

I know, I know – I’m beautiful in the eyes of God. Yes, I get that. He’s sees me as the lovely woman I am. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It’s on the inside that counts. All true statements I’ve said many times. But the flab still has to go. Imagine how prettier I will be if I actually believe that I am? I don’t even know if that makes sense. I guess I just want to be stronger and healthier so that my inner beauty will be more able to shine because I am more capable of physically doing what I am called to do even better. It’s like an old, tarnished silver tea set. You look at it and just know it’s beautiful, but it needs some work to allow that beauty to shine through. I’ve got to get this tarnish off of me.

    1. Incorporate a fresh fruit or vegetable for each meal – We generally have a spinach/cabbage/lettuce salad at lunch/dinner, bananas at breakfast, apples/oranges/grapes are usually available for lunch dinner too.
    2. Use more seasonings to make meals more interesting – One meal, Blue said “Mom, that looks AMAZING!”
    3. Eat breakfast every day, cereal no more than 3 times a week – Done.
    4. Walk at least 3 times a week – Yes – I think we actually walked 5 times this last week!
    5. Don’t eat after 9pm – I’m getting much better here. I’m not even thinking about it most nights.
    6. Try at least one new recipe each week – Yep!
    7. Walk down the lane with a family member at least one time per week – Since #4 got changed to walking, I suppose I should change this one too…
    8. Drink at least 2 big blue glasses of water a day. – Most days.

    Here are the numbers:

    • Starting weight:  204.4
    • Initial goal weight:  150
    • Current weight:  198.0 (lost 2.6 lbs.)

    Weight Loss Wednesday – Week 5 February 16, 2011

This week has been pretty good. I didn’t really think much about “losing weight” and instead tried to get out and enjoy our AMAZING weather the last few days. We don’t have a neighborhood to walk around, the park we are close to is nature trails and doesn’t work well with strollers, so it’s easy for me to excuse away the reasons I don’t get exercise. What I do have, is what we call “the lane.” It’s a dirt road that lead off the main road in front of our house and goes back to 2 other properties. It’s about a 1/4 mile long. So, we’ve been walking that lane the last several days. That is exercise that works for me. I’ve also gone back to work part-time and I’ve noticed that on those days, I’m busier and so I don’t have time to get bored and snack.

I eat out of boredom. That’s my realization. And, sometimes, I eat out of thirst. I’m thirsty and I reach for food instead. Weird.

    Anyway, here is my progress:

    1. Incorporate a fresh fruit or vegetable for each meal – Got this for MOST meals. I’ve only stopped at the grocery to get milk, fresh food and bread, so some meals I didn’t have fresh stuff.
    2. Use more seasonings to make meals more interesting – I got some nice compliments this week.
    3. Eat breakfast every day, cereal no more than 3 times a week – Missed this morning, but did good with the cereal part.
    4. Use Wii Fit at least 3 times a week – Nope. We’re down 2 controllers and the nunchucks and the controllers we do have are out of batteries. I am officially changing this one to walk at least 3 times a week.
    5. Don’t eat after 9pm – I think I did okay on this one this week.
    6. Try at least one new recipe each week – Yep! 12 bean soup with turkey sausage – yummy!.
    7. Walk down the lane with a family member at least one time per week – I didn’t get individual walks in, but we took at least 3, maybe 4 walks in – I forget.
    8. Drink at least 2 big blue glasses of water a day. – Most days.

    Here are the numbers:

    • Starting weight:  204.4
    • Initial goal weight:  150
    • Current weight:  200.6 (lost 3.2 lbs.)

How have you been doing lately?

It’s not been a good week. I signed up to bake desserts for church, so of course I had to lick the bowl and taste test everything. The we had the actual meal at church. Then the Super Bowl which means snacking. And I’ve been sick. None of those bode well for losing weight.

I did realize, however, that I just can’t have sweets in the house. If one brownie tastes good, three taste fabulous! I seriously have no will power. When we have goodies in the house, that’s all the kids want to eat too. Granted, I use whole wheat flour and it’s all from scratch, but still, it’s not good for us. Right now, my sweet tooth overpowers any self-control I have. I guess self-control is a fruit of the spirit I have not yet matured into (it is the last one listed for a reason I guess).

Here is how I did on my goals:

    1. Incorporate a fresh fruit or vegetable for each meal – Mostly lettuce salads and apples. I’ve not been to the grocery in over a week.
    2. Use more seasonings to make meals more interesting – I did make 2 roasts with new ways of flavoring them.
    3. Eat breakfast every day, cereal no more than 3 times a week – Done, although admittedly some mornings it was only a boiled egg.
    4. Use Wii Fit at least 3 times a week – Nope. I still need to modify this goal.
    5. Don’t eat after 9pm – I think I did okay on this one this week.
    6. Try at least one new recipe each week – Yep! We even had the neighbors over to help us taste test it.
    7. Walk down the lane with a family member at least one time per week – Nope. I was sick over the weekend which is when we’ve been doing this.
    8. Drink at least 2 big blue glasses of water a day. – Done.

I did have a general doctor’s appointment today and he suggested some interesting ways to get our family moving. I really like my doctor and he “gently” reminded me that as mom, I set the tone for the family and our activity level. I know everything he said. I know it. I know I should be doing it. I just don’t. And I don’t understand it. I guess I don’t want it bad enough or something? Anyway, here are the numbers:

    • Starting weight:  204.4
    • Initial goal weight:  150
    • Current weight:  203.0.8 (Gained 2 lbs.)

So, how have you been doing? What successes have you had lately?
