Book Review: The Noticer

Sometimes I pick up books that “look good.” Most of the time when I do that it’s from a free book cart/shelf and I figure if it sits awhile or I never get to it, at least it was free. I think that was the case with The Noticer. I don’t remember when or where I picked it up. Somehow it ended up on my shelf and in my 2023 “To Read” pile. (And now, looking at my post from the start of the year, The Noticer isn’t on it, so I guess I picked it up this year?)

One a recent Sabbath day, I needed something easy and light to read. I needed a story and something that wasn’t too long. So I picked up The Noticer. I am so glad I did! It took me two Sabbath days to read, not because it is long, but because I got distracted with other things. The story is engaging, thoughtful, and with a moral compass.

The Noticer is first-person, telling about a “chance” encounter with an old man who floats in and out of a sea side small town. He sees people, really sees people, and helps reframe their perspective. The well known visitor to the town is honest, kind, and loved by all. Each person he meets is changed forever and for better.

If you need a light, easy, uplifting read for a summer vacation, a hospital stay, a plane ride, or just because, I highly recommend The Noticer. In fact, I gave it to one of my kids to read. It is not religious, yet expresses values and morals that most religions uphold, so good for a wide range of people. There is no cussing, no sex, no violence… so good for older kids and teens too! TW: it does mention divorce, miscarriage, homelessness, a suicide attempt, and people working “illegally.”

If you have read or choose to read The Noticer, I’d love to hear your thoughts! Comment below and tell me how you felt after reading The Noticer!

  1. Andy Anderson the author of The Noticer lives on the panhandle of Florida and has written several books. He is one of my favorite authors and is a friend of some of my friends. I have not had the opportunity to meet him but hope to one day.
